David Porter, U.S. naval officer, was born in 1780 and entered the Navy in 1798. He fought in the Tripolitan War and the War of 1812 abd against West Indian pirates. After resigning from the U.S. Navy, he joined the Mexican Navy for three years. He was minister to Constantinople in 1839. From the description of Signed postal cover n.d. (Naval War College).
